SAC Challenge Week 5

Ok…week 5,

I spent several times this week writing  and trusting my subconcious.  I realize how terrible my handwriting is when I need to write quickly! Here are  a few ideas that could be used for a song

1) I wasn’t sure of where to start, so I begin to imagine a scene of a hot air balloon soaring up high.  As I imagined the sensations the feelings I found I was suddenly dragged down into a dark hole, buried beneath the ground looking for the light. ( I guess this could be used as  a song about emotions “the highs and the lows” Bi-polar almost…I hope this is not me! Also A song idea about being “buried alive”  or so to speak)

2) I tried to remember a childhood memory to the best of my ability.  When you are a child you see life in a much more innocent manner.  Colours smells tastes and emotions are the easiest to remember.  It was a memory of a walk my dad and I had on the edge of a high cliff and the feeling of being in awe of the beauty, afraid of the height, but secure in my dads arms. ( song ideas from this could be about the security of a parents hold, but wanting to explore to be “set free”)

3)  I had just finished watching Serendipity on T.V. and decided to write about this topic and what it feels like when you are first in love and sure everything will last forever, how it feels so perfect the heavens must have made it that way…If only we can continue to feel that way!) When I looked at the page  I had a few good ideas, so I began to form them into song. . . And here it is!

MEANT TO BE

Fate and serendipity

Had a plan for you and me

When we met everything ignited

Northern lights across the sky

Shooting stars and fireflies

So bright we were blinded

When I’m second guessing destiny

Looking to disprove chemistry

I can try, but there is no denying

It is so clear our love is undying

We’re meant to be

Keep watching the skies

They’re sending us signals, sending us signs

We’re meant to be

Watch the stars align

We’re meant to be you and I

My Friends are skeptical

They’re jealous and they’re cynical

They say our love will end tragic

I hope one day they get to see

How beautiful love can be

It’s mystical, it is magic

Love can be emphatic

We’re meant to be

Keep watching the skies

They’re sending us signals, sending us signs

We’re meant to be

Watch the stars align

We’re meant to be  you and I

The strength of a thousand moons

Pulling me towards you

The world works in mysterious ways

You’ll be amazed

We’re meant to be

Keep watching the skies

They’re sending us signals, sending us signs

We’re meant to be

Watch the stars align

We’re meant to be  you and I

There are so many signs

Keep watching…

SAC Challenge WEEK 4!

Week 4

OK…So, “rocking the cliche”

I had a bit of fun with this song, although I am not totally satisfied with the final result, I will share what I have so far

So I used some inspiration from the following cliche’s, which I used in my song, some directly and others in a different turn of phrase.

  1. Sink or swim
  2. times are changing
  3. Going under
  4. head above the water
  5. land of milk and honey
  6. we had it all
  7. don’t give up
  8. Don’t let go
  9. Try try try
  10. Under pressure
  11. kiss and make up
  12. sticks and stones
  13. love will find a way

SURVIVE

Tides keep changing with the season

how can we swim when we are slowly sinking

gasping for breath, afraid of going under

struggling to keep our heads above the water

will we get back to the land of milk and honey?

we used to have it all now we’re not so lucky

Even houses made of stone will start to cave

under the weight of a tidal wave

Don’t give up

Don’t let me go

Don’t give up

Don’t let me go

we’ve got to try try try… if we want to survive

if we want to survive

we’re making smoke from all of this friction

send up a signal love, show me your position

sometimes we all get crushed by the pressure

it’s not too late to kiss and make it better

Don’t give up

Don’t let me go

Don’t give up

Don’t let me go

we’ve got to try try…try if we want to survive

if we want to survive… if we want to survive

sticks and stones can break a heart

but glue can mend it

we don’t have to fall apart

if we just don’t quit

love will find a way

Don’t give up

Don’t let me go

Don’t give up

Don’t let me go

we’ve got to try try…try if we want to survive

if we want to survive

Week 3 SAC Challenge

So week 3…How Difficult you are

I took a look at my songwriting and discovered I tend to write slow to mid tempo songs..For my Challenge I decided to write an Anthem type song with a faster tempo and decided to use the Chorus first… I wanted to write a pub like song that might be used in a celebration of life.  I struggled with this song, and partially because I was worried the melody in part may be too similar to another song…the question is which song?  That being said, I will give you my attempt at lyrics this week and will add the song when I come up with a different melody!

WHEN I GO

When I go

When I leave this life I know

when I meet my maker up above

don’t cry

don’t shed a single tear

for I’ve lived and I have loved

 To all my Friends

who saw me through

all the triumphs and the failures too

you gave me the gift of kindness true

when I go I’ll put in a good word for you

When I go

When I leave this life I know

when I meet my maker up above

don’t cry

don’t shed a single tear

for I’ve lived and I have loved

To all my kin

all my family

you taught me to be all that I could be

and to my sweet children, my legacy

when I go I’ll leave behind a piece of me

When I go

When I leave this life I know

when I meet my maker up above

don’t cry

don’t shed a single tear

for I’ve lived and I have loved

To my darling

How i’ll miss your gentle touch

you have shown me what it is to truly love

If you find another who can give you all you’re dreaming of

when I go, You’ll have my blessing from above

Chorus x2

WEEK 2- SAC CHALLENGE- 6 SONGS IN 6 WEEKS

I live in a small town, a very beautiful, friendly town. I decided to spend my first ten minutes in the post office.  We have no mail delivery in our town, so the post office is one of the hubs for socializing and small town pleasantries.

First thing I notice are the many elderly people chatting over a small table in the entrance.  This table is used for sorting through your mail, but often hosts several memorial cards.  The conversations are either that of the weather and what a cold day/ too long a winter or towards a dear friend who has passed.

The two inspirations from this was the long winter we have endured and wanting to be somewhere sunny.  The second idea was about what it would be like to see your friends go one by one and knowing the end is near.

Second place I went to was the local grocery store, here everyone knows everybody by name, staff and patrons often stop to chat.  A simple trip to the grocery store is often prolonged by running into the many people you know and having a “catch up” chat or a gossip with them.  I must admit it is very charming to see so many people taking the time to interact with each other, this happens less frequently in big cities for obvious reasons.   The gossip was interesting, privacy is hard to come by in a small town everyone knows your business, even if you thought you were safe, chances are a friend of a friend of a friend knows your secrets.

Third place I visited was my grandma’s nursing home.  She invited my for a music event.  I was watching this elderly couple who looked as madly in love with each other as I’m sure they were when they were young.  The woman was singing every song, and the man, who was munching on squares and cookies looked lovingly as his beautiful wife.   When a young visitor, maybe 3 or 4 years old entered the dance floor looking cute as ever, the old man smiled.  He then very tearfully nudged his wife to look at the sweet child.  He really seemed to be choked up and charmed by the young boy.

I got to thinking of my own theories of how the two maybe never had children, not for trying, or maybe they had many and not one comes by to visit.   I was also inspired by  how their love was everlasting. Till death do they part!

Fourth place I went to was a coffee shop. I drank my coffee and listened in on this one conversation that started with how cold the weather was and how they were looking forward to some sunshine.  One lady then talked about growing up in Bermuda.  She was talking about the sun and the ocean and her childhood where she sewed her own sun dresses with her mother.  I could only catch bits and pieces of the conversation as it was quite loud in the coffee shop.   It made me remember my travels as a child, I have lived in big cities and warm cities around the globe, but settled here in this small town.  I could relate to the cold long winter and what it does to the spirit.

I have to admit, I did not do the fifth location, but I did notice on my drive home from work on Friday how busy our little liquor store is after work.  It is like a 4:15pm ritual in this town. It got me to thinking of each persons story, from the “alcoholic’s” story to the man buying Champagne for an engagement/anniversary, the business woman having an affair to the girls night out and those who spend their nights alone.  Maybe I will park on the street one day and people watch, I am sure I could come up with some characters for a song.

At the end of this week I tried to come up with a song about my town, instead I came up with a song about California…I can see where the bits of influence came from in the song.  I guess I was just wishing to be somewhere warm again!

CALIFORNIA SUN

woa yeah ah ah

Cold winter morning, blankets of snow

covering empty streets

this town is too small for a girl like me

I know where each road leads

I want to be free

feel the wind in my hair

feel the sand on my feet

smell the ocean air

I want to go back

to where i came from

under the California sun

woa  yeah ah ah

There’s something charming about this town

everyone knows your name

but i’ve got to go this is not my home

I’ve got to break these chains

I want to be free

feel the wind in my hair

feel the sand on my feet

smell the ocean air

I want to go back

to where i came from

under the California sun

woa yeah ah ah

California sun  it’s been way to long

California sun  gotta catch me some

California sun  that’s where I belong

under the California sun

under the California sun

I want to be free

feel the wind in my hair

feel the sand on my feet

smell the ocean air

I want to go back

to where i came from

under the California sun

woa yeah ah ah

under the California sun

woa yeah ah ah

under the California sun

woa yeah ah ah

California

Week 1 Challenge- 6 songs in 6 weeks

Well, first off, I finished a song this week.  It most likely needs tweaking and some re-writing here and there, but I finished a complete song!  I must admit I have had a bit of writers block, so this feels good!

So I have my list of songs  that have inspired me with their titles, themes and/or first lines…

1. Closer to fine- The Indigo Girls (Saliers)

“I’m tryin’ to tell you something bout my life”

This song is about being confused and  the search for answers

2. California- Joni Mitchell

“Sitting in a park in Paris France reading the news and it sure looks bad”

A song about being homesick

3. Something- The Beatles (Harrison)

“Something in the way she moves attracts me like no other lover”

A song about love

Now for the 3 titles, themes and first lines I came up with

1.  Home

“linen on the clothes line the smell of fresh baked apple pie”

A song about childhood memories

2.  been gone so long

” The train whistle blows another small town comes and goes”

a song about travelling/coming back to a lover

3.  it’s too late

“Remember that summer we spent down in Rio?”

A song about lost love

So I took out the guitar and thought about all the first lines I came up with.  I decided to start with the train song… and I never even attempted the other two, maybe another time!

Here are the Lyrics to my new Song

  Em

The train whistle blows

C

another small town comes and goes

G                                                 D

Clickity clack on the track

C           G

I’ve Been gone so long

D           Em

I almost forget

C            G           D     Em

the way you light your cigarette

C          G               D        Em

the way you look in the morning sun

C               D          G

cause I’ve been gone so long

Trying to be a star

a different night, a different bar

a microphone and my guitar a suitcase and a dream

lonely nights on the road

I miss your kiss I miss your hold

an empty heart ,a rolling stone slowly crumbling

I’ve Been gone so long

I almost forget

the way you light your cigarette

the way you look in the morning sun

cause I’ve been gone so long

Em

When this train stops

D                  G

and I’m back in your embrace

Em

when I can smell your skin

D                G

when I can touch your face

Em             G                 D              Em

When I wake up next to you in tomorrow’s sun

C                  D                    G

I’ll be back  where I belong

I’ve Been gone so long

I almost forget

the way you light your cigarette

the way you look in the morning sun

cause I’ve been gone so long

I’ve Been gone so long

I almost forget…

Am I ready for this Challenge???

Let me tell you a bit about myself….

I work full time as a life skills instructor teaching adults with developmental disabilities.  I am also the proud mother of twin (teenage) boys.  I decided a few years ago to start focusing on songwriting after a little nudge from my family.  I, over the years, have written many songs for my own pleasure, but I find writing songs for other people to be a bit of a challenge.  I have been to the Taxi road Rally the last 2 years and have learned a lot about the craft of songwriting.  I have had some good reviews of my songs ( N.S.A.I. had 2 songs recommended for”pitch to publisher” and have been on the “one’s to watch” list 3 times this past year) and some not so good reviews  (like the many rejections from Taxi reviewers)….Welcome to the world of songwriting!   I know that this journey is just beginning and I am still in the process of learning how to write a song that will sell.

I wanted to take this 6 week challenge in hopes that I can ignite the spark inside and hopefully come up with some good material at the end of it all.  I look forward to getting to know everyone.

Cheers
