SAC WEEK 6 FINAL SONG: Matt Dusk

OK, So it was a crazy 6 weeks, but I have six songs to show for it, a couple I really think have potential, and a few that are ok at best.

The hardest part of this challenge was writing for so many different genres. It is easy to fall into what you know best, this pushes you to explore beyond your comfort zone. Some songs turned out, while others failed, some ended up being something completely different, yet a song I could say I was happy to write.

What I enjoyed most about this experience was listening to everyone’s creations, and pushing myself to be creative. Sometimes life gets in the way.  Work, children, life events and health all interfere with the time you need to set aside to write. In doing this challenge you make time, push yourself to find the time, and in the end become productive.

I learned a lot about myself, I need hard deadlines or I leave things until last minute. If I was told week 1 that a rough version of the song was due, I would have had something solid to work from, instead I started with several ideas and never came up with one I liked, so then it got put on the back burner while I came up with week 2,3, 4,5,and 6 songs. I only started working on this song over the weekend, so obviously I had no time for production, which was the whole point of the challenge.  In the future, I  should create my own deadlines, maybe I will accomplish more.

I would definitely take this challenge again, even if I get nervous and stressed about sharing unfinished, unpolished songs. I think most songwriters are helpful in their suggestions and support, it is a great community.  One thing I would do differently is push myself to co-write, being shy I tend to keep to myself, but I need to get over it, lots of people come up with AMAZING songs when writing together!

I hope everyone can see past the lack of production and the female vocals…

CIRCLING THE LIGHT

Oh girl the way you’re flirting
you know that body’s working
so hot this flame you’re burning
circling the light

I want to move in closer

beautiful supernova
but one touch, it’s game over
Circling the light
You’re dangerous,
like a loaded gun
never knowing when you’re gonna pull the trigger hon
If I fly too close
to your hot hot sun
It will melt these wings and I will come spiralling down
oh oh oh pretty illusion
glowing star, light up the night
Oh oh oh if you’re playing games, I’m losing
you’ve got me, Circling, Circling the light the light the light the light

Oh girl the way you’re flirting
you know that body’s working
so hot this flame you’re burning
circling the light

I want to move in closer
beautiful supernova
but one touch it’s game over
Circling the light

I know your type
I’ve seen it all before
but I can’t help myself you’ve got it all and I want more
I’ll take the pain
I’m not keeping score
can’t take my eyes off you, the way you move, across the floor

oh oh oh pretty illusion
glowing star light up the night
Oh oh oh if you’re playing games, I’m losing
you’ve got me, Circling Circling the light the light the light the light

Oh girl the way you’re flirting
you know that body’s working
so hot this flame you’re burning
circling the light

I want to move in closer
beautiful supernova
but one touch it’s game over
Circling the light

blinded
so bright so bright so bright
blinded
circling the light x2

Oh girl the way you’re flirting
you know that body’s working
so hot this flame you’re burning
circling the light

I want to move in closer
beautiful supernova
but one touch it’s game over
Circling the light

SAC week 6 Christmas classic

Well, I had lots of barriers this week, but I did come up with a Christmas Song…a classic? no, but a fun song anyhow..I needed a little humour in my life this week, so here you have it!

Office Christmas Party

I woke up to the sound of Christmas bells ringing in my head
glitter on my pillowcase an elf like stranger in my bed
my brain feels like a snow globe being shook at a rapid pace
I just might toss my Gingerbread cookies all over the place

I drank too many shots of whiskey
too much eggnog,rum and beer
Thank God the office Christmas party comes but once a year!

I think I kicked my boss last night, right in his golden balls
I might have kissed the janitor while he decked the halls
I opened all the presents by the staff room Christmas tree
I danced with good ol’ Santa Clause while I did a strip tease

I drank too many shots of whiskey
too much eggnog rum, and beer
Thank God the office Christmas party comes but once a year!

I Curse that social media for all the gift tags that I got
and I thank the stars of Bethlehem for the parts they covered up
running naked through the office crowd, in nothing but my jingle bells,
How am I ever going to live this down?
I’m such a disgrace
how can I save face?
each time it’s the same, new year, new job, new name!!!

I drank too many shots of whiskey
too much eggnog rum, and beer
Thank God the office Christmas party comes but once a year!

WEEK 5…Hozier replacement song

Well, another week another song!

My biggest issues in creating a mood with my music are my musical limitations with both my vocals and guitar playing! I apologize for the occasional rough note or two!

I started this song with the lyrics. I wanted to write about falling in love/lust with someone who may appear to be beautiful in so many ways but there is something dark about them. Kind of how I imagine Christina Ricci will be portrayed. I hope you enjoy the song!

NEVER BE CLEAN

You Call me to your river
muddy waters cloud my view
of the danger that is lurking right below
I want to wash away my sins
to be baptized by you
but the water, the water is dirty and cold

I could never be clean
I could never be clean
but this is where I long to be
you surrounding me

I can see through the curtains
the darkened image of your truth
distorted by the beautiful stained glass
But all the light in the day
couldn’t shine it’s way through
the shadow, the shadow that you cast

I could never be clean
Could never be clean
but this is where I long to be
you surrounding me

Snakes and ladders
never know where they’re gonna lead
I’ll take my chances
I’m prepared to bleed

I could never be clean
Could never be clean
but this is where I long to be
you surrounding me

I could never be clean
Could never be clean
but this is where I long to be
you surrounding me

Take a listen…

Week 4 SAC Challenge

I was having a bit of fun this week, I decided to do something completely different. It was an idea that came to me in the shower, and those are usually the ones I roll with, so I decided to fuse a bit of African favour to the country song. This song is about a cowgirl dancing by the fire to african drums and being beautiful and hypnotic. I am not sure if this would fit into edgy, but I am happy with the final result!

COWBOY HAT AND BARE FEET
Oh oh ay oh
dancing to the African beat
Oh oh ay oh
Cowboy hat and bare feet

It’s like she’s from a far off place, the way she moves around the bonfire flames
she’s got me in a trance, watching her dance
cotton dress, cowboy hat on, she moving to the rhythm of a bongo drum
She’s doing some voodoo thing, calling me in

She don’t even know
she’s got me underneath her spell
I’m losing all control
over this country girl

Oh oh ay oh
dancing to the African beat
Oh oh ay oh
Cowboy hat and bare feet
Oh oh ay oh
dancing to the african beat
Oh oh ay oh
Cowboy hat and bare feet

I almost forget I’m sitting on a farm, cows in the field and roasting corn
while she’s painting up the sky, with colours bright
Suddenly I notice a million stars, and the roar of a lion off somewhere far
She is beautiful tonight like the southern lights

She don’t even know
she’s got me underneath her spell
I’m losing all control
over this country girl

Oh oh ay oh
dancing to the African beat
Oh oh ay oh
Cowboy hat and bare feet
Oh oh ay oh
dancing to the african beat
Oh oh ay oh
Cowboy hat and bare feet

She’s a dark haired, green eyed sweet dream
skin like diamonds in the moonlight
twirling barefoot southern beauty
calling out my wild side

Oh oh ay oh
dancing to the African beat
Oh oh ay oh
Cowboy hat and bare feet
Oh oh ay oh
dancing to the african beat
Oh oh ay oh
Cowboy hat and Bare feet

Week 3 SAC songwriting and blogging Challenge 2015

Hello all,

So another week, I don’t know if I can keep up..I have fallen badly behind on a song for Matt Dusk! I did however finish a song for this week. Please let me know if you think the melody sounds familiar, it is one of my biggest worries as a songwriter.

I tried to capture the feeling of being a child. These are the things I can remember doing as a kid that still bring me back to that feeling of being young and free and without a care!

It is called MY Little Hideaway

Skipping stones
taking turns, holding hands, here we go
climbing to the tallest treetop
spinning while the leaves drop, we can’t stop

rainy days
chasing rainbows, watching clouds take shape
splashing puddles making waves
we could spend all of our days feeling this way

I’ll take you to my place
My little hideaway (hideaway)
we’ll make believe, we’ll play
My little hideaway (hideaway)

oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh
oh oh x2

running free
tall green grass, buttercups, daisies
soaring higher than a kite
you and I, we’re gonna fly up into the sky

I’ll take you to my place
My little hideaway (hideaway)
we’ll make believe, we’ll play
My little hideaway (hideaway)

oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh
oh oh x3
